Aldi Product Review: Aldi Millville Frosted Flakes $1.69

Aldi Millville frosted flakes
A few weeks ago my son and I decided to give the Aldi Frosted Flakes a try, and my sons agreed to do a taste test.

One of my oldest son's favorite cereals is Kellogg's Frosted Flakes. I used to just stick to cornflakes with sugar, just as I had when I was growing up, but then I realized how much sugar the little fellow actually added to his cornflakes. To control the balance between cereal and sugar, I knew that the Kellogg's Frosted Flakes would be a better option, but when I tried to switch to the low sugar Kellogg's Frosted Flakes, my son certainly noticed, and he would start sneaking out the sugar. At age 8, we are sticking to Frosted Flakes, and I usually stock up whenever there is a BOGO sale and I have a coupon. However, sometimes I do run out, and when I do my son is not happy.

Aldi frosted flakes and Kelloggs frosted flakes

My eight-year-old son is very much into science, so we had to be very scientific about our taste test, using the same amounts, the same milks etc., and we even tried the blind fold method as well. Do not be fooled by the package sizes in the photo above, both boxes of frosted flakes has 17 oz of cereal in it.

Aldi frosted flakes nutritional information
The ingredients and nutritional contents of the Aldi Millville Frosted Flakes and Kelloggs' Frosted Flakes are almost identical with minuscule differences. Click on image for larger version.

However, despite the almost identical ingredients, my sons actually preferred the Aldi Frosted Flakes. My oldest son claims that it is sweeter than the Kelloggs Frosted Flakes, which seems extremely odd since there is 11 grams of sugars in a serving of both cereals.

As a frugal mom the price differences is the big draw for me. By combining coupons with a sale, I was able to get Kelloggs Frosted Flakes for $1.18 each; however, this was a rare case, as I had $1 off 1 coupons, but usually I only have $1 off 3 coupons, which means I can get them for $1.84 each. Nevertheless, the original price of $4.35 for a 17 oz box of Kelloggs Frosted Flakes at Publix is simply crazy compared to $1.69 for a box of Aldi's Millville Frosted Flakes without clipping any coupons.

So my conclusion is that unless I get my hands on another set of $1 off 1 Kelloggs Frosted Flakes coupons, I will be buying the frosted flakes at Aldi from now on.

Did you or your children try the Aldi Frosted Flakes?
Have you made the switch from a name brand cereal to any of Aldi's cereals, if so what did you think?

  1. My kids ate a ton of Aldi cereals when they were growing up! They are all very good. Now that it is just hubby and me we don't eat alot of cereal so it not such an issue, besides we eat old people cereal now (our youngest daughter's description)!
