New Grocery Price Comparison List Between Aldi, Target, Publix and Walmart

This week I actually held off buying both lettuce and cucumbers at Aldi. My South Florida Aldi Store has increased the price on lettuce from $1.29 to $1.59, and Publix still have lettuce at $1.49. Aldi had also raised the price of cucumbers to from $0.59 to $0.89, and Publix still have cucumbers for $0.75 each. I had a $1 off produce coupon, so I saved it for the cucumbers, and got two cucumbers for $0.49 at Publix. I was expecting the cucumber price hike though, as even our local Subway stores have signs up about a cucumber shortage and limiting the cucumbers on the sandwiches.

Now, if you are looking for great tasting, cheap strawberries, Aldi has them this week! I ended up buying three packs of Aldi strawberries, and they still taste better than anywhere else I have bought strawberries this strawberry season.

Aldi Shopping Trip - Great Meat Markdown

Aldi Groceries

I have come to rely on Aldi for a lot of our produce and staples, and even though I fill up my cart at Aldi, I am always surprised to see how much food I get for my money. My eight-year-old son got very excited, when he discovered the $0.99 price tag for strawberries, and he could not wait to finish dinner, so that he could dive into the many strawberries we bought.

Last time grapes were on sale, I only bought 2 pounds, but this time I knew better, so I bought 4 lbs, and I was not disappointed. The grapes are just as sweet as the last ones, and they will soon be gone.

Today was the first time that I bought Aldi diapers in the US (I tried the European ones on my middle son years ago), but my 19-month-old son's Huggies training pants are not doing their job at night, so I hope the Aldi diapers will come through for the night time. I will make sure to write a Aldi diaper review, once we have tested them for a while.

I also spotted one of those marked down meat packages that Amanda from Saving Myself silly always talks about, and I ended up picking up four times the amount of ground beef that I had first picked out for only $2 more.

Simple Aldi Recipes: Jamaican Banana Fritters - Cheap Recipe Linky

A big part about being frugal is about minimizing waste, and one way to do this is by being creative with leftovers or fast ripening food. After we returned from vacation Sunday afternoon, I discovered that the Aldi bananas we had left behind were already over ripe. We had brought a bunch on our vacation, but I still had five overripe bananas leftover. Most often I use overripe bananas for banana bread or banana muffins, but I ended up making Jamaican Banana Fritters. I have only made them once before, and I am certainly no specialist, but they turned out pretty good.

One of our Jamaican neighbors originally introduced Jamaican Banana Fritters to my kids and they loved them, I quickly realized that it was not a healthy version of cooking with bananas though, and I think the Jamaican Banana Fritters need to come with a health warning. Jamaican cooking is very unspecific, when it comes to measurements, so as always I have had to try my way to the best result, and I have made a few adjustments to the original version of Jamaican Banana Fritters including substituting milk with fresh pressed orange juice.

Aldi Product Review: Strawberries Hot Aldi Price Alert $0.99 - $1.99 Per LB

I grew up with fresh strawberries in the garden, and before high school I even worked as a strawberry picker one summer. I absolutely love strawberries, but I am often disappointed with the taste of the strawberries I buy at the store. We are in the middle of strawberry season here in South Florida, and Aldi has had some great tasting strawberries for the past couple of weeks, and the Aldi strawberry prices have been pheneomenal as well.

Last Wednesday I picked up two packs of strawberries at Aldi at $0.99 each (South Florida sale in effect until Tuesday 3/29), and I sure wish I had bought more. They were fantastic, sweet, had a perfect strawberry aroma, and what a great price. They looked great the day I picked them up, and my oldest son and I had a bunch for dinner.

My garden is finally beginning to provide fresh veggies for our family meals, and I am loving it. Soon I will be able to share with our neighbors, but until then, I have given out seedlings, as they cost $2-4 at Home Depot, and I have plenty since I start from seeds.

I wish I could share with all of you as well, but the best thing I can do is have a Home Depot gift card and seed giveaway. Since Aldi is having cheap seeds this week, I am going to host a new giveaway.

One of the Aldi Spot's readers will win the following garden starter prize pack.

Aldi Recipes: Homemade Potato Salad - Cheap Recipe Linky

When I discovered how fresh my bargain red potatoes from Aldi were, I knew they would be perfect for homemade potato salad, so I started my not-so favorite task of peeling potatoes. When I was a  little girl, this was one of my first paid home task....peeling potatoes, and now I understand why my mother would pay me to do this job. My dad actually tried to make peeling potatoes easier by buying an electrical potato peeler, but it turned out to take a while, make more mess than it was worth, and the only thing it works on is new potatoes.

The $0.49 5 lb red potatoes come from Forest Park, Gerorgia, and they are perfect. No dents, black spots etc., and they are actually easy to peel.

New Grocery Price Comparison List Between Aldi, Target, Publix and Walmart

I noticed a very interesting price development this week between Aldi and Target. Aldi has raised it's price on powdered sugar and brown sugar from $1.29 to $1.49, while Target has lowered their price on the very same products from $1.52 to $1.44. Target has also lowered it's price on sugar to $2.50 from $2.79, and Aldi's sugar is still $2.89. This means Target is taking the lead in the main baking department, but they have raised the price on flour from $1.77 to $1.92, where Aldi is still at $1.49 here in South Florida. This just shows you how the prices fluctuate, even when there are no sales. Although Target has lowered some prices, they have raised others, so it is very important to study and know your prices, if you want to get the most out of your grocery budget.

I have put a question mark on the grocery price comparison list for the red potatoes, onions and avocados, which I found on sale at $0.49 on Wednesday here in South Florida. This was a local one-day sale though, so I am not sure what the regular price will be though. I suspect the regular price is still cheaper than at the competitors though.

Now, if you are looking for strawberries, Aldi has them this week!

Aldi Product Review: Season's Choice Whole Breaded Onion Rings $1.89

Aldi onion rings
I love onion rings, but I have never had any success with making my own, and attempting to make them on my own sure is a lot of hassle. So every once in a while, I will buy a bag of pre-made onion rings, and they will usually last us quite a while. I have tried many different brand of onion rings, but to my surprise Aldi's onion rings - the Season's Choice Whole Breaded Onion Rings - have become my favorite.

Now, why would Aldi's onion rings be my favorite? The price? Nope! Save-A-Lot actually have Onions at a better price.

The Aldi onion rings are big, they are crispy, crunchy and they do not sag. When cooked in the oven according to directions they give that perfect crunch, and I sure cannot make them this way myself. I have yet to find a restaurant or fast food place that make their onion rings this way, where you can actually feel, see and taste the onion inside of the crispy breaded crunch, and where you do not have a greasy taste after eating them. So yes I love my onion rings, but they have to come from Aldi.

Grocery Price Comparison List 3/18 - Aldi, Walmart, Target and Publix Prices

I have not been able to make it to Aldi this week, as we just got our car back yesterday. My store did have the red potatoes on sale at $1.29 though, and I sure would have loved to pick up these cheap potatoes. I would also have loved to pick up cheap cabbage, and I hope some of you were able to pick up some great produce deals at Aldi. Thankfully I stocked up on whole wheat bread and produce last Saturday, as the whole wheat price of $1.19 cannot be beat. Before Aldi stores came to South Florida, I bought two loaves of whole wheat bread at Publix each week at $1.69 each, which means that by buying Aldi's whole wheat bread, I am saving $1 each week....almost enough to buy 3 loaves of bread for the price of two at Publix.
