Aldi Recipes: Florida Keys Chocolate Cake - Cheap Recipe Linky

We are longing for the Florida Keys at my house, and since the car is still at the mechanic, we have to get creative. Today we spent the first half of the day at the doctor's for my middle son's yearly check up, we had a very late lunch, and for dinner we decided to make cake. Luckily Aldi has cheap baking supplies, and combined with sales at Publix and Target we had everything we needed to make a Florida Keys inspired cake.

I found a Chocolate Cake recipe at Allrecipes.com and tweaked it a little to fit the ingredients we had had on hand.

Ingredients:
3 cups Flour
1/2 cup of cocoa
1/2 cup of semi-sweet chocolate morsels
1 cup of boiling water
1 cup of softened butter
2 cups of sugar
4 eggs
2 teaspoons baking soada
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup of sour cream

Frosting:
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons of sour cream
2 cups of confectioners sugar

Decorations:
Food colors
Chopped chocolate morsels
Chopped almonds
Sprinkles

  1. In a small bowl mix boiling water with cocoa and chocolate morsels.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add eggs, one at a time, then add vanilla.
  4. Combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt - add to the butter mixture
  5. Stir in sour cream and the chocolate mixture.
  6. Pour into a greased baking pan.
  7. Bake at 350 degrees F for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean
  8. Mix the icing ingredients in a bowl, and once the cake has cooled a bit start decorating.

We used Aldi flour $1.49, Aldi eggs $0.99, Aldi baking soda $0.45 and Aldi powdered sugar $1.29 for our cake, the rest of the ingredients came from our pantry/fridge and had been bought on sale. I can highly recommend buying baking supplies at Aldi stores, and as we run out, I am going to Aldi to stock up. Make sure to check out the Aldi price comparison list to see how cheap baking ingredients are at Aldi stores.

Do you buy your baking supplies at Aldi?

I would love to see your frugal recipes.

  1. My daughter loves to bake with nuts and they are so expensive. She has been getting them at Aldi. We haven't looked into everything else yet. She did check flour but she uses unbleached and bread and did not see those there.
